Radiant Reality PinholesSurrealistic Photographer Marcia TreigerLOOKING THROUGH GLASS There is a language of symbols, and an invisible web that connects all things to each other. These photographs are about form, illusion, and other worlds. To me, that is surrealistic photography. My inspiration and fascination with glass comes from my earliest memories of my fathers glass and mirror store. I remember sitting on the carpeted tables where the glass was cut, where I was be surrounded by a transparent world of glass sheets and light reflections. These days of experiencing this transparent world are embedded in my mind. As a student in art school, I titled a series of photographs called when all is real and nothing is for certain. That philosophy has remained at the foundation of all that I create. My challenge in photography has always been to overcome the photographic reality of the camera, and to create photographs as metaphors, or expressions of something unseen by the human eye, perhaps a powerful presence of spirit. surrealistic photography is the result of this challenge. Using the pinhole camera makes the shooting experience mystical and surrealisticistic, as if the outcome had something to do with a supernatural power. The concept of the pinhole is the origin for which all photographic images derive. This demonstration of the principle of photography has always fascinated me, and allows me to have a perspective that is surrealistic and supernatural, like memories of haunting dreams that persist unrelentingly. Pinhole photography also creates a unique experience, one very different from clicking the shutter. The exposure required to capture these images usually last anywhere between five to eight minutes. It is during that time that an intimate relationship is formed between the light, the subject, and the film. The pinhole sees the invisible, the details that we fail to see during a sixtieth of a second exposure. It is as if spirit manifests within the light, while waiting patiently for the magic to be realized. It is this communication between subject, light, and film that creates a dialogue greater than the sum of its parts. Enjoy my collection of surrealistic photography. |
